Chattisgarh’s Bastar region is caught in darkness. Ever since Maoist guerrillas blew up power transmission towers, in the interiors, on Thursday night, the region found itself in the grip of darkness.
The region continues to remain in darkness for the fourth day in a row, and no hopes of revival seem close on the door. Even before the authorities could restore the towers, the insurgents blew up two more, between Kondagaon and Narayanpur, plunging the Bastar headquarters Jagdalpur into darkness.
The biggest obstacle coming in the way of the authorities is the transport of such heavy machines to the sensitive areas. And even if they succeed in moving the machines, they are not sure when the next attack will take place.
Meanwhile, the state government has engaged itself in talks with the neighboring Orissa government for assistance to the areas plunged in darkness and also to improve the situation by sharing power.
Every passing day brings with it more agony for the common people of Bastar. A candle costs 15 Rupees plunging them more into darkness.
The region is expected to be in darkness for one more week, time required to restore power in the region.
Adding to their miseries are the attacks by the rebels on police stations and Salwa Judum camps - housing villagers, who have taken shelter following threat to their lives.
